Here we are collecting excess oranges from a property in Mesa AZ. These are delicious, from the old Sunkist orchards. The trees were left by the developer of the properties in the area in order to keep the history of the neighborhood alive. It's great to have all these wonderful trees providing plenty of fruit for the residents with more than enough to share!
This community used to have a company come out each year to collect the fruit and send it out of the state for distribution across the country and the world. Then in 2011 we had a citrus quarantine due to a disease known as 'Orange Scab' and ban was placed on exporting any citrus from AZ. This ban caused many of the citrus gatherers to find a new way to distribute inside of AZ or to find other work. The citrus ban lasted so long that once the ban was lifted, none of the companies came back to collect citrus again, leaving these home owners looking for new ways to relieve themselves of all this abundance of sweet, bright fruit that ends up falling from the trees and creating a rotting mess all over these people's yards.
